Sur Plaza Hotel – Where to Stay in Sur Ancient City, Oman

Time to celebrate my 172nd country – Oman! After exploring the beautiful city of Muscat, we headed to Sur where we stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. And in this city our home was South Plaza Hotel.

Located just 220 kilometers from the capital Muscat, Sur is known for its shipyards, which have been of vital importance when it comes to the city’s maritime past. Due to its location, Sur also became a very important city for sailors and traders, especially those from East Africa and India. That is why it is not surprising to see large wooden boats in this city!

Things to do in Sur, Oman

1. Drive Shab

If you love hiking, this is a must! Wadi Shab is a very impressive landscape! You will climb a little uphill along the wadi over rocks and stones until you find yourself in front of a clear cool lake. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes as the stones can be very sharp. If you’ve seen the arid landscape of Oman before, it’s almost like a fairy tale.

2. Ras Al Jinz Turtle Sanctuary

Amazing place but with a lot of tourists. In the evening you can watch the laying of eggs, and in the morning you can watch the digging and hatching of turtles. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see nearby.

3. About the Maritime Museum

This small open-air museum is well worth a visit. It offers great photo opportunities, especially the big dhow. After that, you can visit the nearby shipyard, which we highly recommend, so you can watch the craftsmen build or restore the dhow.

4. Visit castles

One of the best things to do in Sur is to visit its famous ancient monuments – castles! Here you will learn more about this ancient Omani city and how history has shaped it into what it is today.

  • Bilad Sur Castle – This completely restored fort is located on the outskirts of Sur, which has prepared several interior rooms that can be visited. It is only about 200 years old and was meant to protect against invading tribes from the highlands/desert.
  • Ras el Hadd Castle A well-restored complex in the style of an ordinary Ottoman fort, located near the bustling Sur, is worth a visit. While there isn’t much to see in the few interior spaces available, the guides make up for it with their warm demeanor and local stories.
  • Al Sinasila Castle – Al-Sinasilah Castle in the center of Sur is a well-restored and well-maintained fortification. Several available rooms are signposted and partly decorated with love. Also on the territory there is a sufficient number of parking spaces, a toilet and a picnic area.

Where to stay in Sur, Oman

We visited so many places in Muscat before we went to Sur. Hosted by Mr. Mahesh and his team, Sur Plaza Hotel welcomed us with many gifts and surprises. We were spoiled! Ha ha!

At Sur Plaza Hotel our room was upgraded to an Executive King Room which is really cool! It features a flat-screen TV with satellite channels and free Wi-Fi. The modern decor is also very relaxing. Bed? Wow, I felt like I didn’t want to get out of bed anymore, but I won’t miss the chance to explore Oman, so it was a tough decision! Ha ha! For those on a budget, Sur Plaza also has a standard room.

Restaurants at Sur Plaza Hotel

This is one of the main reasons why it is difficult to leave the Sur Plaza Hotel, restaurants! The hotel has 2 main restaurants – Oyster Restaurant and Al Najoom by the pool.

Oyster restaurant

This restaurant overlooks the pool with stunning mountain views and is located in the lobby of the hotel. With the dishes they offer, it feels like we are on a gastronomic tour around the world! Yes, they offer not only oysters, I thought so too, haha!. They have traditional Omani/Arabic, Continental, Chinese/Oriental and Asian buffet and à la carte dishes. These delicious cuisines are already enough to make me happy!

Restaurant opening hours:
Breakfast – from 6:00 to 10:00.
Lunch – from 11:00 to 15:00.
Dinner – from 19:00 to 23:00.

Captain Lounge Bar

If you want to have a drink while you are at the hotel, head to the Captain Lounge Bar, the drinks and food here are excellent!

Food at Sur Plaza is something to look forward to when you check in here. In addition to having a good time, I’m sure you’ll also enjoy digging through all the delicious food in front of you!

Another reason why you should spend your days at the Sur Plaza Hotel is the excursions they offer. Guests can take a dhow cruise through the natural coastal landscape of Ras Al Hadd. You will embark on a 1-hour cruise exploring enchanting places in Sur, Oman.

Ouch! This is not enough, during the cruise you can also have lunch or dinner on board. If you like fishing then you can try this too! The dhow is fully furnished, so I’m sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience here (you can also celebrate your birthday on the cruise, yay!)

We only had limited time in Oman so it wasn’t really enough, but I was so surprised at how much fun it is to explore this charming country! I am so glad that the Sur Plaza became part of my journey around the world.
