The biggest event of its kind to be held in the country, the Itaú BBA IRONMAN Brasil, will have its special edition this weekend.

The league will move Jurerê Internacional (Florianópolis/SC) for the 20th time, bringing the most important names from home and abroad in the modality. There will be 2203 participants from 34 countries, divided into Elite and Age Group, who will complete a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.1km run. In dispute, spots for the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship.

By the way, the stage is the second of the IRONMAN circuit in the country, which started with the Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70. 3 Florianópolis, in April, and still in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Maceió and Fortaleza, all part of the IRONMAN 70.3 series. †

Already internationally known, Itaú BBA IRONMAN Brasil has contributed to the growth and evolution of the Brazilian triathlon for more than two decades. For this, it has brought international credentials of the modality to the country and brought it to the country, allowing technical exchanges and allowing national triathletes to participate in major events without leaving the country. This evolution is clear when we compare the number of participants from the first edition, in 2001, to this year, from 476 to more than 2200.

An important point to emphasize over the 20 years of IRONMAN Brasil is the benefits the event generates for the region. Indeed, the event moves the local community, employing some 2,500 people, guaranteeing all the assistance and comfort for the participants in the collection of kits and especially on the day of the race. A real army of employees, consisting of students, soldiers and volunteers, who contribute to the viability of the event. These are arranged in strategically located areas throughout the course and provide athletes with hydration and food.

The financial movement that Itaú BBA IRONMAN Brasil offers is also quite significant, involving hotels and restaurants. In 20 editions, the average is R$30 million, making it an event with high tourism and economic potential for the city.

Brazil is part of the success story and guarantees highly expressive results. There are four titles, three in the women’s competition with Fernanda Keller (2004 and 2008) and Ariane Monticeli (2015), and one achievement in the men, with Igor Amorelli (2014), as well as beautiful duels during the 3.8 km swimming course. , 180 km cycling and 42.1 km running.

In this special edition, 15 triathletes will represent the country at the event, all with a high probability of an outstanding performance. Remember that the Elite will still be competing for places to the finals of the IRONMAN Worlds in Hawaii. The ratio of the number of vacancies per category is made after the start, taking into account the number of athletes entering the competition.

In men, Santa Catarina Igor Amorelli comes out as a big name. In addition to the title in 2014, he finished second in 2018 and won the IRONMAN Maastritch (Netherlands/2016). In IRONMAN 70.3 races there were three titles in Brazil (Florianópolis 2018/2019 and Palmas 2017), still at the top of the podium in Manta (Ecuador/2018), Miami (USA/2017), San Juan (Puerto Rico/2015) and Punta del Este (Uruguay/2015).

Other strong names in Brazil include Frank Silvestrin, from Rio Grande do Sul, third place in IRONMAN Brazil 2019; Reinaldo Colucci, twice champion of the IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro (2018 and 2019), third in the 70.3 in Pucón (Chile) this year and representative of the country at the Olympic Games in Beijing (2008) and London (2012); Fernando Toldi, third in the IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro (2018); Diogo Sclebin, amateur champion in Kona (2005), who will make his debut in Itaú BBA IRONMAN Brasil, and member of the Olympic team at the Olympic Games in London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016); alongside the experienced Bruno Matheus, Danilo Melo, Eduardo Lass, Filipe Azevedo, Gabriel Klein, Luis Ohde, Luiz Francisco Paiva Ferreira and Vinícius Canhedo.

The capixaba Pamella Oliveira is an example of this, as she arrives for the race with the second place in the IRONMAN Brazil 2019, in her debut in the competition, the fourth place in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Cup in 2018, in South Africa, the performances in the IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis (2018 and 2019), and in Rio de Janeiro (2017, 2018 and 2019). Bruna Manh, from Itajaí (SC), is becoming another national attraction. Twice third in IRONMAN Brazil, the triathlete knows the challenges of the race well and still adds a second-place finish in the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro. Brazil still has Santos Bia Neres from São Paulo, pinnacle of the Olympic distance racing, but these are also sums that have been done over greater distances.
