In June, the festivals of Santo Antônio (13th), São João (24th) and São Pedro (29th) celebrate Brazil’s regional identity. Especially in the northeast, where the fiestas full of forrós, quadrilles, bonfires and typical dishes are among the most traditional, authentic and grandiose in the country. In 2022, there’s one more reason to celebrate: the return of face-to-face events, which have been crippled by the pandemic for the past two years. Bumba-Meu-Boi in Sao Luis do Maranhao

Costumes full of brightness, vibrant colors, the sound of the rattle, zabumba, Baixada and Costa de Mão mark the June festivities in Sao Luisuppercase letter maranhao† The event is a tradition in several cities between the north and northeast of Brazil, but it is in the Maranhão region that it finds its most loyal supporters. O Auto do Boi, the folktale that gave rise to the festivities, follows the story of Catirina, a pregnant cabocla who feels the urge to eat an ox’s tongue. However, the animal in question was the favorite of the farm owner, who vows revenge when the ox is killed by Catirina’s husband.
In 2022, the Sao Joao do Maranhao starts on May 27 with the parade and ends on July 31. Sao Joaoo de Campina Grande in Paraiba

The June festivities of Campina Grandea city 135 kilometers away Joao Pessoa, are washed down with lots of forró, typical dishes and quadrilles. The event, which started in 1983, is considered the “Largest São João in the world”, with concerts by major national artists, quadrilha competitions and presentations by forró trios from the region.
As usual, the event is completely free and will take place on People’s Park, space of 42 thousand square meters located in the center of the city. Equipped with bars, restaurants and stalls, the place is split between the main stage, the pyramid (where the gangs take place) and the Forró Islands, for those who can’t resist a grind.

In the current edition, names like Elba Ramalho, Juliette, Alok, Gusttavo Lima, Wesley Safadão, Léo Santana and Xand Avião will rock the festivities between June 10 and July 10.

Sao Joao de Caruaru in Pernambuco

Sao Joao de Salvador da Bahia

Mossoró Cidade Junina in Rio Grande do Norte
