Soaring through space, revolving around the Earth, while everything from vision to bodily sensations happens in sync with the typical sound of the 1980s. The new roller coaster Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind opens Friday the 27th at Epcot to the public, but the world’s press has been invited to try this one, which is one of the major technological innovations Disney for this summer season in the United States. In fact, the park is investing in attractions and services that use technology to enhance and enhance the public’s experience at the complex.
Epcot’s first roller coaster and first movie-inspired ride guardians of the galaxy at Disney she is also the first roller coaster with reverse start in the complex Orlando. In addition, he has carts that rotate 360°: this is an omnicoster. “We put this technology on a roller coaster so we can move it in the direction we want you to see the action while the car is moving at high speed,” explained Steve Spiegel, a member of the Disney Imagineering team, division companies. a company that is working on the creation of roller coasters.
The Guardians of the Galaxy course takes place in the dark, with various special effects. It is the largest indoor roller coaster in the US at 18,600 m². The space is so large that four spaceships “Earth” can fit inside (for those who do not associate the name with the object, this is the name of Epcot’s symbol ball).
I tried this route at the attraction’s global press launch as part of Disney’s 50th Anniversary celebration, which began last October and runs until March 2023. The route is smooth, as if the cart is really flying. As usual at Disney, this is a family roller coaster, with no extreme hits, bumps, or loops. My only recommendation: do not eat before leaving and always look in the direction where the stroller is pointing so as not to hurt your backs.
I’m far from being a big fan of rollercoasters. Before landing, I was afraid that a reverse launch along with a 360° rotation of the carts would be a very strong combination. In the end, this game gives a pleasant and fun feeling of flying.
Soundtrack and Atmosphere
Contact with Rocket, Baby Groot, Gamora, and other characters in the film begins already in line, all covered, at Epcot’s Wonders of Xandar Pavilion. “We worked a lot with the actors themselves. There are over 75 minutes of original content recorded with them in the queue. Our Disney illusionists (amusement park creator group) visited the set Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to assemble this part,” explained Ana McCarthy, Disney representative for the Brazilian market, during the event. “We also have over two hours of music created by the film’s composer (Tyler Bates).”
Everyone wants to rule the world, from Tears for Fears, was my first Guardian soundtrack. After testing 100 different songs for the sound of a coaster, Disney engineers came up with six others: I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls; September featuring Earth, Wind and Fire; Konga with Gloria Estefan; Disco Inferno by The Trammps; and “One Way or Another” with Blondie. “They wanted to make sure the beats of the songs matched the movement of the cart and the tracks,” says Ana. You never know what song will be playing before release.
The ride is a milestone in the transformation that Epcot is undergoing. After the space of France was completely renovated in the World Showcase, themed RatatouillePixar animation with Remy the mouse around Paris, the park highlights three other parts of it.
World Nature is building the Journey of Water, a Moana character attraction with an unknown opening date. For the 50th anniversary celebration, “Magic Beacon”, the name of the commemorative lighting, illuminates the spaceship “Earth” (at the World Festival), as well as the icons of other parks: Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom; Tree of Life in the Animal Kingdom; and the Hollywood Studios Tower.
Technology at hand in parks and hotels
In the complex as a whole, Disney introduced other technological innovations. The MagicBand, a wristband used to perform activities such as opening bedroom doors at the brand’s hotels and shopping at parks, has received an update. Scheduled for mid-year, at an undisclosed price, the MagicBand+ does what the previous one did and more.
Allows, for example, to interact with characters. Passing by one of the golden statues scattered across the four parks, the visitor will be alerted by the glow of the MagicBand+. Then he waves his hand to hear voices. In total, 50 characters can be found in 36 statues. For example, in Animal Kingdom, Timon, Pumbaa and Simba from The Lion King stand in front of the Tree of Life.
By the end of the year, Hey Disney with Alexa technology will appear in the hotels of the complex. Through the TV, guests can request information about services, set alarms and listen to 25 characters.
And fans of the saga created by George Lucas can already dream of traveling through Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The attraction, which functions as an immersive hotel in the Hollywood Studios themed area, opened in March of this year only to the public in the US and Canada.
Over the course of two nights, travelers become part of the saga, interacting with characters, crew, and other passengers. The Halcyon Starcruiser windows show the galaxy from different angles as the course changes between destinations. The game includes accommodation and entertainment in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
The setting of the rides in this part of the park is already spectacular in itself, whether it’s the mission of pilots and gunners in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (flying simulator) or the battle against the First Order in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (on carts that slide along the ground). ).
What else to see at Disney
Because the United States only opened to Brazilians last November, some of the Disney attractions are still new to many people planning to travel to Orlando. Here are some of them.
Remy’s Adventure in Ratatouille (Epcot): Walking around the kitchen with Pixar’s Chef’s Mouse is a real treat. You smell food, the heat of the oven, and the icy sneeze of bursting champagne. The stroller rotates a lot, which can make some people nauseous – do not eat before the trip, this can cause stomach upset.
Disney Enchantment (Magic Kingdom): The 15-minute nightly fireworks show is still centered on Cinderella’s castle at Florida’s first Disney park. But the enchantment, as the name suggests, has been extended to Main Street (photo), the main street of the Magic Kingdom, since October 1 last year. Projections take visitors out to sea with Moana and into the clouds with Aladdin, among Disney and Pixar characters.
Harmonious (Epcot): The park has gone through several transformations and also won another nightly show at the 50th Anniversary Opening Party in 2021. For 20 minutes, lighting, fireworks and animations projected in the center of the lake present 15 songs from Disney and Pixar cartoons, including the themes Frozen and Viva – Life is a Party.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad (Hollywood Studios): The first attraction featuring Mickey and his gang as the main characters opened shortly before the park closed due to the pandemic, in 2020. Thus, many people were not able to take advantage of this trip. It pleases children and adults.
